Words on Paternity Leave

Recently, San Francisco passed an ordinance requiring businesses to provide paid parental leave for mothers AND fathers. How amazing is that?! We’re so used to it not happening that it sounds foreign.

It hit home with me as I’m currently on a self-imposed paternity leave outside of what my company gives me. After everything it’ll be 4 weeks of leave via FMLA. We just had our second child and I’ve never had this much involvement in our daughter’s life as I’m having now. I feel no pressure of having to work. I don’t feel the itch of returning back to work. It’s been a different version of disconnecting from the outside world.

I type this after realizing that I sacrifice sleep, bathing, brushing my teeth, cardio, drinking, combing my hair and stretching. I type this after being to small myself because I finally found some time to squeeze a workout in.

This is applicable to anyone regardless of what side of the political spectrum you’re on, your financial status or sexual orientation. I realize not everyone can do this and that could be for any number of reasons. This post isn’t for you. Instead, it’s for anyone who thinks that being around your kids is a dumb idea. It’s for any dad who doesn’t want to put in the time to help your partner rearing your kid(s).

This is how I plan on changing world, by raising badass kids with confidence, fearlessness and ambition.
